I like to start my lessons by identifying the weaknesses in my students’ knowledge so we can focus on them. In time, I also give them a short 5-7 minutes assessment at the beginning of a lesson from the previous topics taught to make sure they remember the content covered so far. I usually firstly teach the topic and make sure I adapt my teaching style to my students’ needs (by drawing diagrams, making links, explaining the concepts using easy to understand scenarios, etc), and then I give them questions ranked from easy to challenging for them to get used to them. Towards the end of the lesson I give them an exam style question and a couple of exercises to complete at home, leaving at least 10 mins at the end for them to ask any questions they might have and go again through any areas they are not confident in. One of my biggest accomplishments was bringing a GCSE student from a grade 5 to a grade 7 in two months. I have also been tutoring some of my A level classmates in A level maths and chemistry and the results showed in less than a few of months (going from a predicted grade D to a B in their most recent mock) I am very patient and friendly when it comes to my students, so they shouldn’t have any hold backs when it comes to asking questions (to me, the more questions, the better, as it helps me to understand their gaps in knowledge better).
