Hello, future English Literature students! Here's a little insight into what my classes are like and how I approach teaching this dynamic and complex subject.
Lesson Format
My lessons generally follow a structured yet interactive format. Each session begins with an introduction to the day’s key topics, themes, or texts. We'll often start with a brief historical and cultural context to ground the literature we’re studying. From there, we dive into guided analysis and discussions, often with thought-provoking questions to encourage you to explore different interpretations.
After our initial discussions, we typically break into smaller groups or individual activities, such as close readings, debates, or creative responses. This not only makes the lessons interactive but also helps you engage deeply with the material and develop your analytical skills. Finally, we wrap up with a recap and reflections, sometimes including a short written response or journal entry to consolidate what we’ve covered.
Content & Dynamics
English Literature is vast and varied, so I ensure a balance between classic and contemporary works, giving you exposure to diverse voices and genres. We’ll cover everything from poetry and prose to drama and essays, emphasizing close reading skills and the ability to critically interpret themes, symbols, and character dynamics.
My classes are highly discussion-based, as literature thrives when it’s discussed, debated, and viewed from different angles. I love to hear from students, and I encourage everyone to share their interpretations, ask questions, and even challenge ideas. I use multimedia resources—films, music, art, and historical documents—to enrich the experience and provide new layers of meaning.
My Experience & Approach
With a background in English Literature and several years of teaching experience, I’ve had the pleasure of working with students at various levels. I bring my expertise in literary analysis, historical context, and critical theory to each lesson. However, my goal is to be a guide rather than a lecturer. I aim to create a space where you can discover your own insights and interpretations, building the skills you need to analyze literature independently.
Why My Class?
If you’re looking for a course that goes beyond summaries and analyses, that values your voice and interpretation, and that provides a supportive and engaging environment to explore literature deeply, this is the class for you. Together, we’ll cultivate a love for literature and the tools to appreciate, question, and discuss the texts that shape our world.
Whether you’re passionate about English Literature or exploring it for the first time, I’m here to support you in developing your own unique perspective and analytical skills. Looking forward to seeing you in class!
