I have a First Class BFA Hons from the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford University, and I have spent many years developing my own art practice while also working in various creative industries including film and advertising. I deeply enjoy encouraging others to explore their creativity, develop their skill, and learn about techniques and art historical information to help build a powerful portfolio of work.
Our lessons will begin with fundamentals such as drawing, anatomy study, art history and beginner introduction to painting techniques. We then explore, through the timeline of contemporary art history, the evolving techniques of collage, print-making, sculpture and written word alongside inspiring art movements such as Dada and modernism. I place emphasis on learning about artists outside of the canon and formal training, and encourage students to draw inspiration from artists such as Baya, where drawing, painting and sculpture were used to express her heritage and identity. We will then look to conceptual art, land art, installations and performance, along with with contemporary art mediums including digital art and some graphic design techniques.
I spend time with each student as we explore the broad range of artistic techniques, with regular portfolio reviews, to see the natural evolution and direction of their own art style. We then will focus on honing these skills and developing conceptual ideas to expand each students personal art practice. I conduct regular, friendly crits to allow for self-reflection, collaboration and personalised feedback.
If a student is following a specific examination or course structure, for example GCSE, A Level or an artistic degree, I will happily incorporate the projects and starting points required and help students develop their skills and ideas within these structures. I also have experience in tutoring for various art course interviews or portfolio reviews, and I would be happy to assist any students prepping for these meetings.
