The teaching method is part on the Modern Vocal Training. It consists in creating a balance between chest voice and mixed voice, focusing on stretching the vocal folds. Voice and artistic growth are very vast subjects. The conjunction of several techniques and methods help students unleash their full potential.
I have 2 ways of assessing my students. One is a simple 5 tone scale exercise on “A” that starts from their chest voice and continues towards their mixed voice. This is a good way of understanding their full range and if they struggle anywhere along the way up. After that, I ask them to sing a short song to see if their way of singing is the same as the previous exercise. I prefer to do the song too because most of the time, they execute both tasks very differently. After the assessment, we take a few minutes to discuss what I have heard, what the diagnosis is and then we make a plan for the future, which is the goal we want to achieve together.
Resources: I have decided to create a library of exercises that students can access and download online. I am creating my website which is where I will have packages they can buy as well as free exercises and tricks. That includes warm up and exercises based on their diagnosis.
Also, I record lessons and send them to the student via email to make sure they don’t forget what we did and to track progress.
Homework:
Generally, the only homework I give students are interval training with an app called Functional Ear Trainer (intervals are a good way of training your ear and visualising notes), 5 minutes daily warm up exercises to make sure they give time to their vocal folds to wake up and one song to learn and to work on, chosen together.
