Through previous tutoring of my family and friends, I tend to start off by having the student send me what they want to learn/revisit/revise, so that I can go over the topics in my own time and fully ensure that I know the best ways to teach them. Along with the student telling me what they already understand, I shall start off by gauging what they know through questions around the topic/subject.
From there, based on their knowledge (be it no understanding, or just a few minute details), I shall go through the required topics and explain how they work, and why they work in this way. The 'why' is the most crucial part in my opinion, as it provides the student with not just knowledge of a certain topic, but also the skills to link it to other areas of their subject(s). This deeper understanding is how a student can progress to the level that they want to achieve, rather than having a surface level knowledge of the topics they want/need to learn.
To conclude a lesson, I shall once again go through questions on the subject/topic, and this will show the student what they can now grasp in their subject area, and what else might still need to be worked on in future lessons.
