I like to begin my first session by asking the student what they feel would be the best approach. Everyone has different learning styles and I’d match my teaching according to their needs. Once that has been established I would prepare examples to walk the student through and then have sample questions for them to try independently. We would then review their work together and iron out any difficulties they may point out. I would then give them an exam paper / exam style questions to attempt for homework which I would mark and provide / walk through solutions with them in our next lesson. If they are confident in this we can move onto the next lesson. The core of my teaching is making sure we are working at the students pace and changing my approach to suit them.
