Each student will have different learning objectives according to their individual needs, and these will be defined in their learning program. For each lesson, before introducing the learning objectives, I always start with an open discussion. This aims to check what the student has worked on or learned from the previous lesson. Once we have identified what they found difficult or easy, we revisit the main points or consolidate their knowledge with more practice.
I combine different learning approaches including both visual and listening supports. This includes props, books, pictures, quizzes, games, listening to music, radio, as well as podcasts. I make lessons interactive and enjoyable.
I follow this step by clarifying instructions for the new lesson. A typical session (an hour long) will be divided into four sequences of fifteen-minutes each. These could be, for example, reading and reading comprehension, discussing a text, grammar, spelling practice. During every step, I carry out learning checks to reflect on how well the lesson is going and to check the students knowledge.
Learners are assessed on their understanding of information, their independence in answering questions, their listening skills, their contribution to discussions, the level of support they needed, the structure of their explanations and their writing skills.
Based on the observations made, we can move on to another topic or explore the theme in more depth, using alternative teaching methods.
I advise learners to make short-term goals from the start, and when I give homework, it is to encourage them to practice.
