The direct technique, commonly referred to as the audio method, involves thinking and speaking in English. The student is not permitted to speak in their native tongue during this conversation between the teacher and the student, which must exclusively take place in English. Everyone can work on their spoken language and strive to gradually improve it in this way. The Direct Method was created after research into how young children acquire their first language. Consider how you first learned to speak your own tongue. You first began to experiment with language after listening to adults and older kids, honing your speaking skills via trial and error and action and reaction. The direct approach of reproducing this natural language learning process is based on this fundamental principle.
I also taught students in Egypt who were at the beginner's level but then I instilled confidence in them by telling my students that even my first language was not English so they soon realized that they could also try and become fluent speakers. I strongly believe in the power of positive thinking and influencing others through my action because sometimes students are observing the action more than words. One just needs to push themselves and then the herculean task of learning becomes fun and enjoyable!
