After tutoring for over three years across a broad range of age groups, I have developed my style of teaching, which is consistent regardless of the topic being covered.
Firstly, the student and I meet for an introductory session where I can assess their level and ask them to reflect on both the areas which they have found easiest and those that are more challenging. From there I create dynamic lesson plans to first tackle the more challenging subjects, interspersing reinforcing lessons on the topics which are easier throughout the schedule as a way of encouraging the student as well. Lessons rely on student engagement, I present a topic and then we work through example problems together. I always encourage my students to think out loud and to lead the session - I believe that this is the most effective way of shaping one's learning as it allows me to guide their thinking onto the right path and work on reaching the correct conclusions rather than simply asking them to memories a set of facts. The session always ends with checking that the student has written down the key concepts of the lesson, checking in to see how they found the difficulty as well as setting homework and next steps. I stress the importance of homework as well as the fact that this is for their own benefit and that it is about making the best use of their time so that we can go over any questions that they may have after the fact.
