During our first lesson, I’d ask for their yearly or term breakdown in the subject their learning (if that’s given to them my their teachers). If they’re in GCSE or A level I’ll have their specification and we’ll use that to highlight what they know and what they struggle with. If our tutoring is throughout their academic year then after their schools lesson, we can go through it again in more depth to consolidate their knowledge. We can also do pre class lessons so that they get to their class with an understanding of what they are going to learn. This is how I studied and retained information in my A levels, especially in biology as it is such a content packed subject. I’m a very patient tutor as I have struggled to learn and understand the need for someone to teach me patiently. In the past few years I have come across different techniques for learning and studying and worked with what I found to be most efficient for me. I understand that everyone learns differently so I would aim to incorporate those techniques in our initial sessions and see which works best. Tutoring works best if it’s consistent and I will show my tutees how to revise effectively so that they can continue to learn in the future. I was a tutor for a year when I was in year 12 to GCSE students. I also helped the younger students (year 7/8) with reading and maths. My subjects are Biology, Chemistry and Maths, and I would like to teach from year 7 to year 13.
