My lessons will focus on one main topic per lesson, beginning with an open discussion of the concept, this discussion is to ensure a good fundamental base knowledge and understanding is obtained before moving forwards. I describe this as a discussion and not a lesson or presentation because it is intended to focus on the students thought process regarding the topic, not me restating what has been covered in school. This is discussion is vital in correcting any misunderstanding or logical missteps before approaching questions or applying this fundamental knowledge.
Then I will expand upon the concept, broadening the scope and adding new details to consider, again this is to promote the logical thought process behind discussing these topics.
Once discussing the topic and ensuring the student fully understands the basics we can then apply that knowledge in the form of questions, starting simply to build confidence and get used to applying the thought processes discussed before building towards those similar to what will be asked by exams.
The main advantage and difference between this method and that used in schools is that at all points we can change and alter the lesson to suit the student. If their understanding is solid but they find questions confusing more time can be spent slowly going through the application. Similarly if a topic is very confusing or more in depth we can spend as long on the discussion and fundamental understanding as needed. Unlike schools having one student at a time means the pace is set by the student alone, no rushing or dragging through content, no repeating questions on well grasped areas or skipping past those less practiced.
