I find the first lesson to be introductory and all about getting familiar with the content I will be teaching and getting to know how students revise, when they need a break, etc.
For example, I can use PowerPoints, practice questions, recommend videos and websites, set homework if necessary, etc. and will adapt depending on how effective each method is. However, regarding maths I will put a focus on teaching methods and practice questions as knowing a method and being able to apply it is most curcial in exams.
I usually helped friends understand concepts by taking them apart and explaing the reasons behind why using this method is most effective and simple, one of my methods being implemented by the maths department due to its efficiency and effectiveness.
Studying psychology I recognise everyone learns differently and it's important for me to inspire at least a small liking to the subject rather than forcing content onto students and demotivating them completely which will prevent effective revision. For this reason I try to implement a more relaxed environment where the students will feel comfortable speaking to me as a person as well as a tutor. I hope this encourages questions being asked and can offer them help in other aspects other than maths which in my opinion will collectively improve motivation, work ethic and build trust.
