I have experience tutoring all ages from 7 to 23. I have taught French, from beginner to A level, English literature and language GCSE, and English as a foreign language. I am currently teaching English as a foreign language for ELAC study vacations. I have a very strong etymological knowledge, having studied A level Latin. I also have a very extensive cultural knowledge, which I bring into my teaching as much as possible. I believe that my passion for literature and the arts is infectious, and makes the often laborious process of learning a language highly rewarding.
My lessons generally begin with a resource, such as a text or video, followed by comprehension questions. I might then go through homework, making corrections or suggestions. The lesson can then progress into more general discussion, where I promote critical thinking, and expand my pupils' cultural awareness. I have also done creative writing exercises with pupils who needed help expanding their vocabulary.
I recently completed my secondary PGCE with a high distinction, meaning I have extensive teaching experience not only in the private tutoring setting, but also in the classroom. This classroom experience, along with lots of training in specific pedagogical strategies, has made me an infinitely better teacher. I have learned how to anticipate misconceptions, check for understanding, and keep students actively engaged.
I have also done some Oxbridge entrance tutoring, and in particular I would be happy to do some one-off MLAT/interview prep for people applying for literature/languages at university.
