I tailor my approach to the needs and preferences of each student, incorporating their preferred techniques alongside a few of my own. One of the key strategies I use is working with past paper questions, mark schemes, and examiners’ reports. This method is invaluable for understanding what examiners are looking for in terms of terminology and the required level of detail.
Each session would typically include an exam question at the beginning or end to assess understanding and highlight areas to improve, whether in content or exam technique. Sometimes, a quick verbal quiz might be used instead to track progress. A typical 1-hour session would involve a brief review of prior material, focused work on agreed topics, and applying learning through an exam-style question, ensuring a balance of understanding, practice, and feedback.
Having been examined under the new A-level format (changes placed in 2015), I’m well-acquainted with the updated marking criteria and the standards required to achieve top marks. I also have all my resources from that time, including revision materials that helped me achieve my own grades, ready to share with students. At the end of each session, I always ask for input on the topics to cover in the next meeting. This allows me to prepare questions, notes, or other materials in advance, ensuring a smooth and effective learning experience.
With experience tutoring and mentoring students of various ages and abilities, I’m confident in my ability to adapt to each student’s unique needs. I remain flexible and open to trying new techniques to maximise their learning potential.
