The best way to pass exams is by understanding the fundamental basics and applying it to past paper questions. Making a point without evidence will only get you half a mark and so by understanding the reason for the point and how to word it would ensure full marks. For english lessons, a larger range of vocabulary and persuasive language techniques can make sentences and drafts flow much better teaching the techniques can improve ones writing skills.
