Working as a tutor for Kumon has additionally equipped me with the knowledge of working with children and being in a learning environment. As a tutor for this organization, I have been able to work with students ranging from the ages 5 to 16 years including preparing year 6 pupils for verbal reasoning exams. In the past it has been my role to prepare year 6 pupils for SATS by practicing past exam papers. At the end of the term, I would write a report on their progress and occasionally have meeting with students’ parents regarding their performance. The role prepared me for teaching tasks such as carrying out lesson plans, marking homework and being able to cope with pressure and challenges that I personally enjoyed facing as the rewards were more than worthwhile. Nevertheless, my experience not only includes working with children but also adults as the Celta course allowed for training with adult learners of various ages and language backgrounds. Consequently, this has built confidence in me working with different age groups making my teaching experience diverse. In addition, Kumon has also offered me the opportunity to excel as my promotion to KS4 tutoring allowed for me to work with secondary school children focusing on language analysis and various literature works such as novels, plays, and poetry. Some of which include the famous works of Charles Dickens in ‘Great Expectations’, ‘Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ by Robert Louis along with several Shakespeare plays such as ‘Macbeth’ and ‘Mid-summer Night Stream’. All of which together worked in opening my horizons to various fields in teaching.
