Everyone make a practical fun group of ten. Include stickers, people on a bus, straws in a bundle, pennies in a purse etc. Supported work.
Children say they have a ten and show with a 10 value card.
Teach : Always 10 in the group and no objects next to the group. Do this through questioning and emphasising no more through big reactions.
Show this represents 0 say 0 ones
Children repeat chant / sing .
Check understanding: Place less than 10 people on a bus . Say I have 10. ( use puppet to engage) Children to tell puppet he hasn't got 10. Puppet fixes problem.
Sing 10 people sitting on a bus 3x .
Children make 10 again independently.
Challenge.
Show a 10 group and an extra one beside the group.
We know we have 10 , in the group. How many outside the group. Write 10 on the group.
Children can see one extra.
Does anyone know what I have to do now with the 0 ? Is it no ones now ? Tell Children to have a think with a partner.
Challenge Children to work out it is 10 and a 1 independently first/ ask children for their feedback.
Show children how the extra one replaces the 0 so it makes 11.
Finish with counting around group to 10 land on 10 winner.
