I'm a qualified nurse, with an Honours Degree in Anatomy & Cell Biology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Studies. I have taught anatomy to medical students as a postgraduate demonstrator. I have also been an occasional lecturer in the School of Nursing at Sheffield, providing refresher courses in Anatomy and Physiology to nurses on post-registration courses. With a strong background in Biomedical Science and Nursing, I'm well placed to help students who need to improve their standard of English in order to follow academic courses and professional careers. I hold 150-hour advanced TEFL certification, along with accredited certification in IELTS preparation.
I'm strongly committed to equality in society, and I believe that TEFL plays an important part by helping people to achieve their ambitions through the ability to communicate effectively. I'd like to say that I'm just as happy teaching basic and intermediate English. As a student nurse on placement, I was privileged to be involved with helping young adults with learning difficulties to obtain their basic certificates in adult numeracy and literacy, and I found the experience to be highly rewarding. I am very patient and having been a mature student, I understand the obstacles faced by mature learners.
For basic and intermediate levels, PPP (Presentation, Production and Practice) is a tried and tested method which allows learners to keep to a formal structure. This can be useful for learning content. I am keen to encourage more advanced students to use their English in real world contexts and applications, so there are opportunities to employ PBL (Project Based Learning) to extract the facts from a given scenario, organize their findings and present them. This type of learning is far more 'open ended' and is compatible with a learner-centred approach to teaching.
