Since I began my teaching career, I have worked in a variety of roles and gained valuable experience in the development of children as active learners. I have eighteen years’ experience as a classroom teacher of primary pupils (Year 3 – Year 6) and now work as a home tutor, developing pupil’s ability in Literacy. Through my work as a supply teacher I have worked in primary schools, running Literacy intervention programmes, providing pupils with opportunities to consolidate skills and develop new competencies in line with National Curriculum targets.
In my experience I have learned that children need a context for learning, particularly in primary school when the expectations for progress are high, and strive to ensure that I provide learning activities that pupils can relate to and, thereby, engage their interest. I also believe that pupils need the opportunity to discuss their learning experience and their understanding of tasks, as this can help to identify the most effective strategy to develop their skills and consolidate their learning.
Since 2022, I have found that the consistency of children's education has been affected and many pupils lack confidence in their ability to learn and achieve. My sessions have clear focus on developing children's skills for learning to enable them to tackle new topics and tasks with confidence.
