I like to take a creative and student-led approach to tutoring. I believe in finding a way of working that best suits the student and allows them to excel.
If a student approaches me with a particular problem, I like to take a well-rounded approach, using different sources to help provide information, encouraging discussion and questions, then tackling an exam-type problem together. I believe that this allows the student to develop skills to think critically about the subject and use both knowledge and problem solving skills to bring them to the answer.
If a student requires general course help, I still take a similar approach where the main importance is on the student building problem solving and critical thinking skills as well as knowledge on the subject.
My lessons often include a discussion of the topic, examples to add context to what we're learning, some problems and questions which we work through together before the student approaches the problem alone. I believe through discussion where the student is comfortable enough to ask questions, is an excellent way of identifying what or why a student may be struggling with something.
I often like to use metaphors and real world examples when explaining difficult scientific concepts as I believe it makes the information more palatable and then when the student understands the concept, we can layer in the course knowledge required. I also like to use real world examples and a variety of sources of evidence to put the information into context and ensure that the work is interesting.
I encourage breaking down problems in whatever way makes sense to the student and fully support their individual learning style.
