I have been tutoring both groups and individuals for two years and have found the best way for students to achieve is by having a question based format. This means that I prefer to ask questions which help students come to their own conclusion about how questions should be answered. I find that this also improves the students own confidence in their ability to answer questions outside of tutoring itself. My ultimate goal is to increase students belief in their abilities to achieve whilst also improving their own critical thinking skills. I find that this approach not only helps them within the specific subject area but also in the wider world, as it prepares them to both question the world around them but also be able to build their own informed opinions.
In this vain my lessons are mainly student led, in that I intend to follow the students own thought paths and ideas without forcibly inflicting my own interpretations or views. I think that this is the best way to allow the students themselves to grow and develop their own academic abilities. However, I also try to maintain a critical viewpoint which both improves a students own ability to defend their argument (a valuable skill to develop) but also prepares them for essay writing. Likewise, I try to prepare students for examinations by setting practice questions which are discussed and planned within tutoring sessions and become the foundations of the above mentioned questions posed. This further allows the students improved confidence in their abilities to perform well under exam conditions.
