My sessions initially would start with getting to know the child, understanding how they like to learn and what they thrive doing. This will help lead the sessions following this to ensure that the session is tailored to the child’s needs. Following this, each session would begin with a starter, recapping what we learned from the previous session, followed by an input of the new topic that we are covering. We will work together through examples using an ‘I do’, ‘We do’ approach, which will provide the child with confidence and an understanding. This would then be followed by demonstrating to the child how to answer or complete work on that particular topic independently and then the child will be encouraged to show me some independent work with support always available. I will always use the child as a ‘child expert’ to explain to me how and why they have produced the work they have as this allows them to really understand and embody their learning. Once the child is confident, challenges will be set that stretch the learning for the child and ensure they are diving deeper into their knowledge and understanding. I am also more than happy to set tasks to be completed in their own time (homework style) and then go through these together once we reconvene at the next session to really ensure they have understood their learning - if this is something parents/careers would like. I always ensure the child’s needs are being met academically and emotionally during a session as a stressed or anxious child will be unable to learn and this could really impact their well-being. It is imperative that a child is given confidence when learning through scaffolding and modelling which is something I ensure is in all my session.
