I explain and show the student step by step method/s of how to answer questions from
topics they are struggling with ( which they tell me in advance) and encourage the student to ask any questions as no question is silly. I then concept check by getting them to answer questions ( including exam questions) until they feel confident. This concept is then reinforced by the student completing the set homework. Any further clarification, if required, after completion of the homework is addressed first before moving onto the next topic.
I also like to ensure that solid basic foundations are laid before moving onto more complex topics as sometimes there are gaps in the basic concepts that prevent them from making progress with the more advanced ones. As well as asking the student a list of the topics they are struggling with, the student will be asked to complete test papers ( at home with no assistance) to also help identify any weak areas which will also be addressed during the lesson.
My aim is to ensure that the student is happy and confident with all topics in the maths syllabus and starts to love maths!
