I have experience teaching both online and face to face for GCSE and A level Biology. I like to tailor lessons to the student and their learning needs- I can suggest topics but I am equally happy to be guided by them if there is something they want to cover. I like to involve the student in the learning process as much as possible, for example usually I would make the students make their own notes in the sessions for topics I am teaching- writing it out themselves is more of an involved process than me doing it for them, or just looking at notes other people online have made. I will start off by asking students to tell me what they know before building on it. I take a patient and understanding approach with students to help them feel relaxed in sessions.
What lessons are like is variable. For topics that may be new for the student, I would spend most of the lesson teaching them the subject matter. For topics that they may know a bit, I can test their understanding or can help with practice questions. If it's closer to exam time, then either going over past papers in the lesson, or if they attempt one in their own time then I can go over anything they didn't understand, or help them revise any subject that they want to at the time. Overall I think this tailored approach helps students feel like their lessons are useful and hopefully they can enjoy them too!
