I like to use conversation about applicable topics (e.g. the student's job/interests) to find what type of language is most needed, and where the weak points are. From there, I tailor exercises to improve grammar and vocabulary, with real-world resources such as news articles or level-appropriate literature. I encourage students to explain grammar points back to me to ensure their understanding....
