Alicia Cognevich

With a master’s degree in English and a decade of experience teaching English and literature to people of all ages, I have spent most of my adult life passionate about literature, learning, and the impact of these on communities. Literacy is the foundation upon which a person’s academic and professional life can rest. I would like to help lay down that foundation.

I have experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and empowering those with learning and physical difficulties. With excellent attention to detail, grammar, reading comprehension, and organizational skills, I am able and eager to help you speak and write English at a high professional standard. Previous duties have included:
• Lesson planning and implementing, differentiating curriculum to suit various learning styles, developing summative and formative evaluations, and evaluating student work
• Modeling and drilling close reading of fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry for reading comprehension and information retention
• Instilling and drilling composition skills, such as prewriting, constructing a thesis statement, writing an outline, drafting various essay forms (persuasive, narrative, review, research, etc.), arguing logically, researching, line- and content-editing, peer reviewing others’ work, and formatting an essay using MLA format
• Guiding students in presentation skills, including the use of visuals and technology
• Employing multimedia in the classroom, including Microsoft Office programs, slide presentations, videos, online study tools, interactive educational games, and audio books
• Encouraging student-led learning, serving as a facilitator rather than lecturer

Before we begin, we will establish your base skill level and goals for our sessions. From there, I will tailor lessons to your needs.
