First, I start by understanding the level of competence the student has of the language and the aims of their lessons, for instance why they would like to learn the language in question.

From there we can act accordingly as to what the student needs to learn and understand first. Each lesson starts by covering a topic, i.e food or transport. We will look at the topics vocabulary and relevant verb conjugations.

Making clear, helpful notes is personally a big part of teaching as I find it very useful when students have comprehensive notes that they can look back on. Notes will include direct translations, examples, and if need be phonetic explanations.

Each section of learning is punctuated with practice. This involves me asking questions surrounding the topic for the student to answer. The questions I ask will be in English, but if you are learning another foreign language then I may ask questions in that language.

It is important that the student asks me questions based on the topics and learns to understand when I speak, as understanding your conversational partner is key to having a smooth conversation.

In subsequent lessons we will do a recap at the beginning of the lesson to review our understanding of the previous lesson topics. This way students retain information from previous lessons and hopefully use past lesson learnings in the present or future lessons.

After the lesson has been completed there will be homework for them to complete in the time before the next lesson. This may be in the form of questions, in the form of learning a vocabulary list or learning verb conjugations.
