When revising for English I found the most effective way was increasing my ambitious language and truly thinking outside of the box. With my students I will aim to guide them with simple frameworks that can be manipulated in any situation to allow them to answer any question to a satisfactory level. I first supported students at my school with my English teacher in year 11 and really enjoyed polishing young minds and felt I would be great at teaching students due to my clear communication and confidence. I think an hour or two a week could be more than enough for a student depending on what year they are in and other things, but my focus would be the quality of what I deliver not the quantity. I aim to be definitely push the students as I will have progress checks ready to check if in fact, progress is being made. In addition to regular progress checks, I will embed retrieval tasks at the start of every lesson for the first 5-10 minutes to allow the students to try recollect everything they can possibly remember about a particular sub topic we have already covered together, ensuring the student gets access to new content and slowly builds information into their long term memory. Finally, studying in a grammar school has really aided me in figuring out what is the best and most effective way to deliver content that caters for a students unique needs. Being in such an environment allowed for me to see how my own teachers ensure every single student gets the help they needed, whether that’s spending a bit more explaining the fundamentals to make sure the complex components come easier, or through dual coding or through videos or mind maps. I feel I’ve been equipped with the necessary skills required to be a fantastic tutor.
