My experience in tutoring, before venturing into online mentoring, stems from university exposure where I passionately and enthusiastically led classroom-based mentor sessions for undergraduate students studying their scientific and analytical skills module and practical laboratory assessments. My teaching style in those early years was to engage with the class by highlighting key outcomes from the lesson, reinforcing uptake of the material by additionally communicating one to one when required. Rather than providing answers, as a peer assistant learning mentor we were taught the importance of principle facilitation in part by asking leading and open-ended questions, resulting in increased student confidence enabling them to apply these concepts to future problems. Personally, I have benefitted from tutoring when I needed additional help to improve my grade in statistics and that very positive encounter, my temperature nature and communication abilities gives me confidence that I too am qualified to tutor.
