I have two years experience as a lecturer at QMU in Edinburgh, teaching at both undergraduate and master's level (SCQF 7-11). I am a member of the school of health sciences and as such, a lot of my teaching is related to biology, including anatomy & physiology, oncology, pathology and cells, cell cycles.
As part of my role as lecturer, I have recently completed the PGCE in higher education and have since used this learning and knowledge to inform my teaching practices. In addition to this, I am (nearly!) a fellow of the higher education academy (FHEA)
I appreciate that students learn in different ways - this could be visual, reading, audio etc. and I believe it is important for the learner to be able to identify the way in which they learn and study best. This then helps me inform the tutoring session by utilising different learning materials to enhance the student's learning.
I like to create a relaxed and fun atmosphere during my lessons as I believe the most learning occurs if people feel relaxed and comfortable. With topics or sessions that students provide particularly challenging, I like to break down the learning points and try and teach these points in different contexts to try and help the student gain an understanding of the topic for a more transformative learning style.
I am also currently the admissions tutor for radiography at QMU, so if you are a student looking to apply for university soon, I will also be willing to offer guidance and advice on this as well.
