I believe lessons shouldn’t leave a student lost in endless confusing theory. Lessons should be clear and specific, and the skills learned should be identifiable and usable. The ESA method I use leads to engaging and practical lessons.

The first phase is to introduce the topic and promote thought and discussion, as well as to introduce the target language like grammar concepts or vocabulary. This phase clearly elicits the idea of each target language element, which prepares the student for the next phase: study.

This phase offers students a chance to have hands-on experience with the target language in order to get a feel for what the target language means and how it can be used.

The final phase is an extension of that, and creates a scenario for students to not just see what the target language means, but to actually put it to use.

Throughout each lesson, error correction plays a big role. If something you say doesn’t make sense, I want to help you fix it and trace back the error to identify what skills can help you express yourself correctly. I have met plenty of people who never got corrected and feel like what they say makes perfect sense, only to visit America and realize that what they’ve been saying sounds strange or confusing.

I also offer conversation lessons. Plenty of students have put hours into mastering theory, but freeze up in a real conversation. Getting practice just having a casual conversation without judgement is very important for building confidence.
