I am final-year medical student at Imperial College London, and throughout my degree I have developed very useful skills I would like all of my students to pick up.
I like to have a clear plan for any lessons to make sure all of the objectives are met within the allocated time. However, I prefer to keep things flexible to allow the student to input their idea of what would be most useful to the session.
I also encourage engagement throughout my lessons, by creating exercises where the student actively contributes to the content delivery and explanations. This ensures that any student is focused and immediately tries to frame the explored concepts from their point of view.
I am aware that a lot of students struggle to maintain concentration for extended periods of time, so I like to keep the sessions light and include small breaks to allow for maximisation of the time allocated.
Finally, I encourage student to summarise the salient points explored in the session to double check understanding and clarify doubts before the end of any lessons. This allows for more solid delivery on content to the student as they are challenged to recall and repeat what they have learnt.
