Through my experience I have found that for private tutoring students respond best to teachers closer to their age. I start my lesson by asking for a smile and an hour of positivity from them; I have found in the past that pretending to enjoy a subject will lead to them absorbing more of the information. I then will go through the theory behind the chosen topic and answer an example question with the student. I will then ask the student to explain the theory back to me. We will then work through some questions together where I will ask them to explain why they are doing each step. Depending on the students understanding we will either move onto exam style questions then if those are understood well I will create more difficult questions for them otherwise we will try working through questions with a different approach. There are a few ways to explain maths and physics theories and one will always stick. Some concepts are beyond a students’ depth and that is okay together we will come up with a method the student can remember.
Closer to exam season we work through as many exam style questions as possible. Maths and science differ from other subjects as they rely on students being able to identify key words and key methods, not every maths question needs to be fully complete for a student to be awarded marks for it so we will work as far as the student can manage. From my experience having this confidence to even start a question can encourage the student to try harder and achieve better marks on their exams.
