In the first lesson, I will consult with the student and ask them what their main goal of these sessions are so we can build a schedule around that: whether they need help with the whole syllabus or specific subjects they have gone over in class. I will then explain to them the procedure and how to overcome the problems with explanations and going through example questions. I will then give them a few practice questions to try and to explain to me how they reached that answer so that I know that they have understood everything I have gone through. If they are up for the challenge, I will give them a harder question to go over or a wordier one that might not seem so simple. At the end of the lesson, I will give them a few exam-style practice questions as homework which they can do in their spare time and we can go over at the beginning of the next session to see if they had any problems with it. I have always loved maths, but I remember a time where I really struggled. One of my teachers really invested his time in helping me through the problems I was having and from there I learnt how important it is to have a good teacher who is willing to always help and how it can change your outlook on the subject. I want students to find my lessons relaxing and without the embarrassment of asking questions, which can sometimes de daunting in a class setting. I also want them to give me feedback on ways that the teaching might work better for them as not everyone learns things in the same way. Finally, I want my students to have fun with maths and be more confident in what they have learnt the next time they come across that problems, whether it’s in class or in an exam.
