At the beginning of the first session, I will begin with a small exam and test their current knowledge. If they have any school exercise books I will review it and use it to plan future lessons. When the student is done then, we will both go through the test and see what they have answered wrong this informs me on what they don't know and what they're weak on, while it helps the student improve. With each session going forward, I will have materials ready before the lesson. When the student is confident on all the topics in their year, we could potentially look at doing work a year higher. All the work will be stored in binders and exercise books for easy review.
