The quality of teaching methods have a significant impact on students' learning outcomes and as such teachers employ a variety of learning techniques and teaching tools. Nonetheless, an even greater component in effective teaching is the ability to be responsive and to adapt to students' personality, expectations, motivations and moods.
Naturally, one must use different approaches depending on the type of lesson; in one to one teaching the emphasis is on the student providing the content and the teacher providing the form. This is a basic paradigm radically different from the traditional "Presentation - Practice - Production" of most classroom language teaching.
For example "Re-formulation" is a technique where the student expresses something in L1 (their own language) and the teacher offers the L2 (the language they are learning) to the student who then practices it and repeats it and possibly records it too.
In class teaching, the emphasis is on group work, active learning, encouraging students' participation, hands-on activities, motivate lively, entertaining or thought-provoking discussions. It's also important for the teacher to make sure she doesn't overcorrect during these tasks as this could give rise to fear of exposure among students.
To help students memorize vocabulary , teachers can use a variety of amusing and interesting games and word-plays activities.
Audio and visual aids practice are also key tools for effective teaching.
