In year 13, I balanced alevel work and medicine applications with tutoring a student in year 12 to help him get up to speed with A-level biology. He was finding the jump from GCSEs to A-levels particularly challenging and having experienced this myself I was able to help him improve in his ability and confidence, leading to him being predicted an A* in the subject. My main method of assisting his learning was to first of all identify his weaknesses and areas where he was less confident and then go through content in this area with him, making sure to clarify and explain everything. The most important part of my methodology was making him feel comfortable to ask any questions he had no matter how stupid they seemed to him as I know that this is key for understanding. Aside from this, I also did past paper questions with him and shared with him the flashcards that I used myself to obtain an A* in biology.
