Teaching UK National Curriculum and IB as KS1 - KS4 across mainstream, independent and special school in London. I cover English, Music and other subjects as needed.
London is also home to a large number of students who speak other languages than English, so I decided to try and help them to increase their proficiency in soeaking and writing.
I live music and having listened to a lot of no -English music, I realised how helpful music can be in learning a new language.
So, I love to bring in music lyrics whenever I can to help my students out in real context the language they learn in formal lessons.
We study folk songs and poetry and look at how language is used in them to convey ideas and emotions.
Using this method, my students make quick and substantive progress that lasts for a lifetime.
Also, this way they acquire key cultural competencies that allow them to relate effectively with others in English and contribute to real conversations.
English language bears key similarities with French, German and Nordic languages but also significant differences that make for a great cross-cultural and cross-linguistic study.
Even beginners are often struck to fond out that a similarly-sounding word means something eleae in English and it's great fun and intellectual exercise to look for the etymological roots of the reapective words and find out how their different meaning spells the diverging histories of the two cultures.
Music and etymology may so be two of the most fun and informative pieces of support in English tutoring and I love bringing them up whenever relevant.
