During my lessons, we will prioritise what you’re aiming to achieve in the short and long term on drum kit. That can include improving technical skills such as advanced rudiments, preparing for an upcoming drum kit grade or learning songs for a performance or gig. If you are completely new or don’t know what you want yet, I will teach you all the basics, from drum grooves, stick patterns, and playing along to songs!
Being fluent in all genres, I can cover all past and contemporary styles so you are fully prepared for whatever gig is thrown at you.. and believe me, it could be anything! Not only will this open doors for you, it will improve your drumming skillset arsenal… have you ever thought about trying Latin drum kit exercises to improve your coordination? Jazz and swing for improving your double strokes and ghosts notes selection? Rock and Metal for your stamina? Hip hop and R&B for your groove? We can balance, technical exercise with learning new genres and preparing for upcoming gigs or exams in each lesson.
Having played through all the Rock School and Trinity Guildhall grades, I know how daunting drumming exams can be. We will work through the songs for each grade at your appropriate skill level as well as the rudiment and technical exercises. I will also give you tips on playing along to click/backing track, what it’s like in the exam room and most importantly, how to stay calm when playing on the day so that your play as well as you do in the practice room.
I will also include unique tips based on my 18 years experience. For example, how to play along to click/backing track with headphones, IEMs or speakers, prioritising purchasing the drum gear that you will get the most out of, what it’s like playing local gigs and clubs including being efficient in getting your gear on and off stage quickly and reading the room for the best audience engagement. Being able to also play guitar, sing and understand music theory, I can help drummers understand what works best for each part of every song. This helps massively when writing your own drums parts, which - did I mention - is the funnest thing to do on Earth! There’s nothing more satisfying than audiences dancing along to a groove that came out of your own head.
We can cover all of this and much more. I am punctual, confidant, hard working and dedicated to showing students how much fun playing the drums really is.
