I would focus firstly on knowledge of the topic and especially relevant facts - achievement in historical essays at GCSE and A-Level turns on knowledge of factual examples to illustrate arguments. I have multiple methods of learning facts which suit different learners. Next, I would turn to analysis of facts, and how to analyse the topic in a way that would obtain the top marks.
