In the past, the way I have had lessons with previous students, I would always assess how much they know of the subject and let them write down what they think they struggle on, and also make notes on what I personally see that they struggle on. If they have little-to-no knowledge of the subject I would always start with the basics to start foundational knowledge, to proceed with a better understanding. I would then give them small tasks with the areas of the subject that they were already comfortable with and assist them more with the areas they struggled. I always encourage them to tell me if they want a break or have any questions.

From my experience with smaller children, I could see they often responded well with an environment where they were comfortable to speak their opinion, ask questions, and feel confident and happy about their efforts.

I have also seen with older students that I’ve had that they also often thrive in this type of environment, and so I look forward to being able to assist more children this way.
