The piano is a keyed string instrument. Inside the piano, there are hammers and strings. When the performer presses the keys, the hammers that are attached to those keys hit the relevant strings which is what makes the sound you hear.

What type of instrument it is depends on how it is played. As the playing action of the piano is done by the player hitting notes, which then active hammers which hit the keys, it is classed as a tuned percussion instrument.
