The focus of the GCSE course includes the English language, and the emphasis is on developing learners’ ability to read, write, speak, and listen. These skills are more basic particularly when learning English literature. In English literature, GCSE focuses on developing knowledge and understanding and interpreting prose, poetry and drama texts.

English language should ensure students can read fluently and write effectively. They should be able to demonstrate a confident control of Standard English and they should be able to write grammatically correct sentences, deploy figurative language and analyse texts.

In GCSE English, you’ll study both English language and literature. You’ll focus on things like writing essays, analyzing texts, reading different novels, poems, and plays, and improving your grammar and vocabulary. It’s all about understanding how language works and expressing yourself clearly.

Hi Melanie; the focus of the English Language GCSE syllabus is on Reading skills (which includes): close analysis of language and in identifying text based answers, addressing inference questions, being able to give own points of view and perspectives, being able to summarise key ideas. The writing paper is aimed at testing your knowledge and understanding on purpose and audience as well as well as descriptive and narrative writing. Needless to say these areas require an accurate and wide range of spelling, punctuation and grammar.

For English GCSE, you will be expected to practice your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. To help in this, you would also be required to do creative writing, grammar, use various writing styles, argue for / against on specific topics and explore some philosophers.
