Literature has a great potential to increase your linguistic knowledge. You don't need to understand everything, just enjoy it! I recommend reading 'contes' initially to avoid fatigue. Maupassant is a great start!

Reading is one of the four competences to learn a language, you can begin with short books or ask a school teacher of French in France what is the syllabus they give to their seconary level pupils. Browse schools in France and drop them a line even if you are a beginner

Literature is essential in learning French, as it deepens understanding of both language and culture. By reading French literature, students gain exposure to authentic language, including idiomatic expressions, diverse vocabulary, and various writing styles. Literature also provides insights into French history, philosophy, and ways of thinking, enhancing both language skills and cultural knowledge.

Reading a grear French novel or poem will help you understand how French people think and feel. For example, the great French poet Baudelaire published his collection of poems under the title, Les fleurs du mal. Thar means Flowers of evil in English. Thiz steems like a paradox because we dont usually think of flowers as evil. Baudelaife helps us to understand that evil can be attractive and even beautiful.

It can help to see how French people use their words & also to get an idea on French culture. But literature can expand to anything written, can't it 😉

Litterature gives the language a variety of context with topics of interest and it's a way of considering the way others live. Litterature can be often in the form of reading books though I consider newspaper articles and journals to be forms of litterature also. Short stories are an ideal form of litterture since whole books can be quite long and cumbersome sometimes.

I don't think that litterature is too important to learn a language in general. Most important thing is communication and practice with people 😊
