I'd like to learn English with good pronunciation and it seems to me that one of the basic rules is that you shouldn't pronounce all the letters. What exactly are these silent letters? Is there a rule?

Know the rule is to miss out the first letter and say the second one.

Silent letters are letters that don't correlate with any sound when a particular word is spoken. There are silent vowels and silent consonants. Silent letters can help differentiate homophones (words that sound the same but have different spellings).

You will never pronounce the letter U when it follows Q. The U always follows Q. The U emphasises the Q, and softens it. This applies to several letters when connected to the previous or succeeding letter. Some examples are ghost, tough, thorough. The H in thorough softens the T. The H in shut softens the S. The trick is to read articles and say the words to yourself, and listen to their pronunciation. When you have difficulty, use an app which has a verbal translator for that word.

There are more but it is best to learn them as you go along. Some Rules can be silent before a certain letter, or after a certain letter at the end of a word etc.
