Mostly we get glucose from the digestion of carbohydrates and then this gives us energy through respiration. However, there are other pathways to obtain glucose but these require us to use energy and won't happen unless glucose is unavailable. Gluconeogenesis is one of these processes and it uses certain organic acids like lactate or pyruvate and these include some amino acids which come from proteins. Obviously this happens when you fast because you will run short of glucose and other carbohydrates but it will also happen in diabetes because of the disregulation of glucose. Does that help?
