Advert description
I have a BA in English Literature from The University of Sheffield and have been an online tutor for a year. To date, I've taught over 300 lessons, from KS3 to A-Level.
In my lessons, I predominately use visual learning tools such as mind maps and visual storytelling, as I believe they strengthen understanding by making learning more enjoyable and memorable.
I find this especially useful when helping students with their set texts, as it sparks their imagination by prompting them to imagine key settings and characters in greater detail.
Visual storytelling was a highly effective technique that helped one of my A-Level students. When I started tutoring them, they lacked confidence and understanding in their set texts: Heart of Darkness, Lonely Londoners and Dr Faustus.
Over eight lessons, we worked through key chapters and linked characters, symbols and themes with images in a way that was memorable for them.
As well as improving their knowledge of their texts, this technique also helped ease their anxiety around exams by making lessons more enjoyable. When I finished tutoring them, they could confidently comment on all three texts and construct essay plans for each.
My specialist area is Gothic literature, having taken Fin De Siècle Gothic (published at the end of the 19th Century) as one of my final year modules. The module gave me extensive knowledge and alternative viewpoints on core texts such as Jekyll and Hyde, Dorian Grey and Rebecca.
Due to the depth of analysis, this would be particularly useful for A-Level students. However, I can also adapt the material to fit GCSE students. They also don't need to be aiming for top grades as I can adjust the depth of analysis depending on the student.
