Tips for learning French vocabulary

Bonjour,

In my 25-year career as a tutor for French lessons, I have always put myself in the shoes of my students and I have always strived to find strategies to simplify their French learning, adding one or two fun ingredients along the way.

Effortlessly learning long long lists of vocabulary is no longer a myth!

What style of learner are you?

One of the first steps you should take when learning French vocabulary is to identify what style of learner you are. Do you memorise more effectively when you have a visual representation such as an image, video or flashcard? Or do you find it easier to hear words and then repeat them aloud to yourself? C'est la grande question!

Determining your preferred learning style is essential for making your learning easier and more efficient.

Tips for learning vocabulary

  • If you are a visual learner, try to accompany new vocabulary with your own symbols and drawings so that you can visualise the concepts better.
  • As mentioned before, perhaps you prefer to learn through listening and speaking. If this is the case, repeating words to yourself can be a great way to memorise vocabularly. You could even record yourself and listen back. In this way, you can also listen to your pronunciation and see if you need improvements.
  • A mnemotechnic strategy to assimilate a list of vocabulary is to take the first letter of each word and rearrange them in a way that means something to you - otherwise known as an acronym. MR VANDETRAMPS is a good example of this. Perhaps this rings a bell from your French lessons? This particular acronym is designed for remembering the verbs that are conjugated with the verb " être" when you want to construct the past tense. E.g je suis allé, on est arrivé, tu es parti, ils sont tombés. Sudents love putting their personal spin on learning vocabularly, and it can ceratinly make the process more fun. Et hop le tour est joué!
