Great jobs are always popular. Often, online advertisements receive 100’s of keen applicants per role. As someone with 13+ years of recruitment experience, I have reviewed 1000s of CV'S and have noticed some common traits. Whether you are preparing to enter the world of work in the future or are currently looking to switch jobs, having a great looking CV is crucial to securing that all important interview. Here are some tips on how to produce a killer CV to help you land that interview:

  • The best CVs are 1-2 pages maximum. Unless you have 20+ years of working experience, a maximum of two pages is sufficient. Hiring Managers will want to review something that is eye catching and concise containing key information and no waffle. If you have 5 years work experience or less, one page is advised.
  • Write a clear and concise personal summary at the top of the CV. This should be no longer than a paragraph and should include a clear summary of your experience to date and what you are looking to do next.
  • Focus on your best achievements and provide clear quantifiable evidence of what you achieved - e.g. provide numbers, data to back your sentences up.
  • Describe how you have overcome challenges in the past.
  • Demonstrate (with examples) how you are a collaborative team player.
  • Stand out from the crowd with any entrepreneurial achievements. Don't worry if you don't have tons (or even any) experience in the working world. Good hiring managers will often look for indicators of your personality and character over your working achievements. Perhaps you set up a club at school or managed to raise money for charity? Make sure to include at the bottom of the CV.
  • Make sure to list any training, education or courses you have undertaken. Showing a proactive approach to situations by participating in self learning can show a lot of your character and may be the difference in terms of landing that interview.
  • Use keywords related to the industry or study sector you are in so your profile is more searchable online. Often recruiters search for CV'S using keywords, so be sure to have everything covered included keywords of the industry/sector you are looking to move in to on your CV.

  • Include a link to your LinkedIn profile - having a professional LinkedIn profile is a great way to become more visible and again shows proactivity on your part. You can include the weblink at the top of your CV (below your name). An active LinkedIn profile is a great extension to your CV. If the hiring manager views this and sees you have built connections and professional relationships, this could really set you apart from the crowd. Why not set yourself a target of connecting with 50 relevant professionals in your sector or the sector you are looking to enter!
  • At the bottom, be sure to include `references available on request.`
