Hello, everyone! Have you recently started learning a new foreign language, or are you still deciding which one you might like to try? Your choice (unless prescribed by your school/ college) will depend on many factors. There are personal preferences, family connection, reasons for work related requirements, travel to particular countries (especially for long trips) , bilingual issues involved in bringing up a family with more than one mother tongue speakers, and so on.
The Pro's and Con's are worthy of your consideration. The original mother tongue also matters, of course. Depending on whether the language chosen is a member of the Indo-European language group, you will find it easier to relate to another, similar one, be it vocabulary, word order, script, etc. Example: Romance languages include Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Romanian. Germanic languages include German, English, Dutch, Flemish, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish,Icelandic Friesian , Afrikaans.
I personally find it easier to absorb a related language, quicker and very stimulating to spot the similarities, question certain rules, learn culture specific vocabulary, idioms, sayings and find reasons for using particular words in specific situation.
Another point often over looked, to my mind, is an affinity with the language and positive attitude towards it and its speakers is required. After all, language is not just a means of communication, but stems from culture, attitudes, beliefs, assumptions , values ...
In summary, choose a language wisely, open your mind to new challenges, attitudes, outlooks. It will broaden the mind! Good luck to all who find this subject simply fascinating!
